How to Choose the Right Web Design Company: 7 Things Hong Kong SMEs Should Check
Don't just compare quotes — check these 7 things too
There are plenty of web design companies in Hong Kong, with quotes ranging from a few thousand dollars to hundreds of thousands. Comparing on price alone makes it easy to pick wrong — a "from $8,000" quote can mean very different things depending on the company. Before you commit, walk through these 7 items.
1. Does the quote include domain, hosting, and SSL?
Some quotes cover only "design," leaving domain/hosting/SSL as separate costs; others bundle everything for the first year, then renew from year two. Ask exactly what's included in year one and how much renewal costs — only then can you fairly compare quotes across companies.
2. Is SEO/GEO built in?
By 2026, nearly half of Hong Kong users have already switched to AI tools (ChatGPT, Perplexity, etc.) for search — not just traditional Google. If a site has no basic SEO (meta tags, schema.org structured data, sitemap), neither Google nor AI may ever find you. Ask clearly whether this is already included in the quote, or an extra charge.
3. Is the delivery timeline actually written down?
"A few weeks" carries no real commitment. The right approach is a contract that states "first draft within X working days of deposit," plus a turnaround commitment for each round of revisions. Without a written timeline, it's hard to hold anyone accountable when delivery slips.
4. Are revision rounds/scope capped?
"Unlimited revisions" sounds appealing, but few companies can actually sustain it — an uncapped revision policy tends to either erode the company's margin or degrade service quality over time. The right approach spells out how many rounds are included and how overages are handled, so both sides know where they stand.
5. Who owns the website and domain?
Once paid in full, the site's code and domain should belong to you — not locked into the design company's own platform (e.g. only editable through their proprietary CMS, making a switch painful). Before committing, ask: "If I ever want another company to take over, can I simply take all the files with me?"
6. Are there real case studies you can verify?
"100+ clients served" is easy to claim, but real case studies are what actually build trust — ideally with a link to a live site, not just a few screenshots. A company without real case studies isn't necessarily bad, but it's worth asking more about their background.
7. What support looks like after delivery
Launch isn't the finish line — will anyone help with technical issues afterward? Will someone remind you when the domain is about to expire? If you want ongoing SEO/GEO optimization, is there a corresponding monthly retainer plan? Sort out these post-delivery arrangements upfront, rather than discovering there's no one following up later.
The bottom line: the quote is only step one
When choosing a web design company, the number on the quote is only a reference point — what actually determines whether you get burned is whether the 7 items above are clearly answered. If a company can't answer these basic questions, think twice no matter how cheap the quote looks.
