DIY WordPress vs. Hiring a Design Company: Which Fits Your Business?
What is WordPress, and why does everyone talk about it?
WordPress is the most widely used content management system (CMS) in the world — the source code is free, and its plugin and theme ecosystem is huge, so in theory, anyone with "a bit of computer know-how" can build a site themselves. That's its biggest selling point.
But "knowing a bit of computer stuff can get you a site" and "building a site that actually helps your business" are two different things.
What you need to prepare if you go the DIY WordPress route
- Hosting/domain: WordPress itself is free, but hosting isn't — you have to choose and renew it yourself
- Theme selection: thousands of themes exist, and not all suit your industry — pick wrong and you're starting over
- Plugin management: SEO, forms, security all depend on plugins, which sometimes conflict with each other — debugging is on you
- Time cost: from choosing a host to going live, this can easily eat dozens of hours of learning
- Ongoing maintenance: WordPress core and plugins both need regular updates — skip them and you carry a security risk; update them and things sometimes break (layouts shift), requiring manual fixes
Who's a good fit for DIY?
- You (or someone on your team) has some technical know-how and time to figure things out
- Your site's needs are simple and you're not in a rush to launch
- Budget is very tight and you'd rather trade time for money
Who's a better fit for hiring help (whether a design agency or a service like ours)?
- You want to launch quickly and don't want to spend dozens of hours researching themes/plugins
- You want SEO/GEO done right from day one, without configuring plugins like Yoast SEO yourself
- You want a human doing QA, not discovering the mobile layout is broken after launch
- You want someone handling ongoing maintenance, without remembering to update plugins or renew the domain yourself
How do the costs compare?
DIY WordPress: hosting + domain runs roughly a few hundred dollars a year — but that doesn't count your time. If your time is valuable (running the business, meeting clients), that "free" time cost isn't actually cheap.
Hiring a design agency or a service like ours: a one-time fee starting at $2,800 (1–3 pages, first-year domain/hosting/SSL included) gets you a site that's ready to use, has SEO built in, and comes with someone following up — freeing you to put that time back into your business.
It doesn't have to be all-or-nothing
The lightweight CMS in our Business plan is, in a way, meant to give you the same "edit your own content" freedom as WordPress — without the burden of maintaining plugins, hosting, and security updates yourself. We build the foundation; you handle the text and images.
